Character Info
Name: Alistair Theirin

Canon: Dragon Age

Age: 21

Canon/AU/CR AU: Canon

Reference: Alistair’s page on DA Wikia

History: Like Dragon Age: Origins’ title suggests, the Silent protagonist can come from an array of backgrounds depending on their race (human, elf, dwarf) and class (warrior, rogue, mage). Alistair’s Warden companion will be Natia Brosca, or female Commoner Dwarf Origin and will have been a rogue. To give a quick run-down of his Warden ally and her accomplishments thus far (as they greatly impact him throughout the game):

- Brosca was mostly sarcastic and violent, with a show no weakness/never submit mindset, but with a decent heart (somewhere…). Started with a more negative nature and leaned towards neutrality by Alistair’s canon point.

- Brosca had a tendency to mock Alistair’s more childish and unmanly behavior (difficulty dealing with the death of the Grey Wardens, and father type figure, Duncan) at first, but later grew a “tolerance” for his way of dealing with things – always pushing him to stop “being such a sissy”.

- All gifts were given to Alistair with a current approval rating at +75 (Warm).

- Brosca gathered all potential party members.

- Helped elect Bhelen to be King, saved the Circle as well as First Enchanter Irving while preventing the Right of Annulment, sided with the werewolves and killed the Dalish elves and Zathrian while asking for werewolf aid for the final battle. Connor will have been spared by using blood magic to kill the demon in the Fade, while killing Isolde in the process. The ashes from the Urn were gathered successfully without any defiling or destruction.

- Brosca will have romanced Zevran

- Alistair will be “Hardened” during his Companion quest

- Brosca will have allowed Alistair to duel and kill Loghain.

- Alistair will have been elected King.

Canon Point: After the landsmeet but before leaving for Redcliffe.

World Information: In the series Dragon Age the world is a mostly unexplored place, the main continent and focus of the stories told within the series is called Thedas (THE Dragon Age Setting, wow creativity). The time period is most closely relatable to medieval time with a fantastical twist, including; magic, dragons, werewolves, spirits, and demons. Here there are: elves; thin-boned and short creatures with large “alien” shaped eyes and pointed ears, dwarves; stout and short with round faces who prefer to live underground, with a thing for ale made from who knows what and beards, humans; classic peoples comparable to even you and I, hold a tendency to take over lands, ruin it, and then preach about others’ wrongdoings, kossith; mostly known as Qunari or those who follow the Qun (a way of life where everyone has a place and must stick to it), although the Qun is open to all races those who created the Qun are tall, gray colored “ox men” with large horns on their heads or kossiths. Countries are ruled by Kings and Queens, Emperors and Empresses, most of which are either elected by their fellow nobility or rise to power from heredity alone (with the occasional help from an assassin, war, or misguided boat…). But also within this world are darker things. From blood magic (a forbidden magical practice that uses life or blood and not mana) to darkspawn (evil, twisted, tainted creatures that want nothing more than to wipe the world of life), Thedas is no peaceful place.

Those with the ability of magic (a gift/curse some are born with, mages can be human, elf, or kossith) are either sent to the Circle of Magi to be supervised by Templars as they master their talents, lead lives in hiding from the Templars outside of the Circle as apostates, or in the case of kossith who follow the Qun, serve the Qun as servants, with large collars kept on their necks. Mages are people who are feared more than respected, as demons (spirits and demons reside in the Fade a place for the afterlife and dreams) seek them out for their talent in hopes of possessing them and seeing the world through their eyes. The way demons do this is often through coercion, promising to give the mage something they want whether it be powerful blood magic, or fixing a broken magical mirror. Sometimes it is harder to evade a demon than one would think. Thus, the Templars exist to watch over them and watch for any signs of corruption or mages who seem they may turn to blood magic (blood mages are commonly called malifecar(um)). This overlooking is more unwelcome than welcome as some Templars take matters to extremes. The two groups have always clashed with tensions slowly on the rise.

Humans, Elves, and Kossith are not exactly the only ones capable of wielding magic. Some darkspawn also possess such a talent. Darkspawn are as the name itself suggests, creatures that spawned from darkness and sin. The Chantry (main human religious group) says that man, or more specifically Tevinter Magisters (mages who are ruling nobility of a once great but now fallen empire), thought they could overthrow the Golden City (their heaven/home to the Maker or god) which resides within the Fade. But once they entered the Golden City it was blackened by their sin (now called the Black City) and the Maker sent them back to the world as tainted creatures known as darkspawn. These were the first darkspawn and they have yet to be eradicated entirely from the world over a millennium later. Darkspawn seek only to follow the Call of the Old Gods (dragons worshiped by Tevinter Magisters) who beckon to them constantly and they are forced to obey. But in finding the Old Gods buried deep beneath the earth, they taint them and thus the Old Gods become Archdemons. In doing so, a Blight is caused as the Archdemon leads the darkspawn armies to the surface. The darkspawn under an Archdemon’s leadership kill and destroy everything in their path, leaving only burnt and corrupt remains behind (even soil is useless for years after a Blight). The only way to end a Blight is by killing the Archdemon itself (without the leadership of an Archdemon darkspawn retreat underground until another is found), but in order to do that one must be a Grey Warden (Meaning: Drink AIDs darkspawn blood! Become a Grey Warden! Some side effects include but are not limited to: Really bad trips with gibberish talking dragons, Darkspawn spotting, overeating, obligations to a lost cause, becoming possibly sterile, and ultimately premature death! Go through the Joining now! What are you waiting for? Gryphons no longer included. Some restrictions may apply.) .

Grey Wardens are a group of elite warriors and mages and whoever they can find, really. If they think you can survive the Joining (drinking darkspawn blood bit, very fatal but some do survive) and prove useful, you’re in! Grey Wardens believe that they must do whatever they can to defeat darkspawn and Blights (without a Blight people think their behavior is insane – but not when you consider they are constantly at war) and not always is it ethical or necessarily “good”. Because the Blights threaten everyone, Grey Wardens have the Right of Conscription. Like it states, they want you, you’re in. Doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from (from Kings to a guy on deathrow). But drinking darkspawn blood has its issues. If one survives they possess the taint (but hold a mild resistance to it – can sense darkspawn, connect with them in their dreams/nightmares) which unfortunately gives said survivor only about 20-30 years left to live before the resistance runs out and they pick up more darkspawn like qualities (hear the Call of the Old Gods loud and clear, start looking like them too – unpleasant purple/bruised corrupt skin on a corpse). At such a time (should there be no Blight to kill them) they go on their Calling to darkspawn filled Deep Roads (previous home of the dwarves with only 2 cities remaining, thanks darkspawn) for an imminent death. Well, most of the time. All of the above minus the recruiting itself is a secret though (or no one would join or even possibly value the order).

Alistair himself, is the bastard son of the late King Maric of Ferelden(basically the Britain of Thedas). As the (sort of secret) bastard son of the King he spent half his life under the generous care of the late Queen’s brother, Arl Eamon (Queen Rowan having passed away before Alistair was anywhere near the picture). He slept in hay and was otherwise ill-treated to a degree that left him resenting his blood and always longing for a proper family.

He was later sent to the Chantry to become a Templar (yep, those mage-hunting creepers) when Arl Eamon’s wife grew suspicious of rumors. There he trained until he was recruited into the Grey Wardens, and was told to keep up his Templar skills for the sake of combating magic wielding darkspawn more efficiently.

During the events in Origins King Cailan (Maric’s legitimate son, Alistair’s half-brother) dies in battle leaving the throne up for grabs (cue Civil War) during the middle of the fifth Blight. By Alistair’s pull point he will have been nominated King by his fellow Warden, the coronation being after the final battle with the Archdemon, should he survive.

Personality: Alistair is your classical hero type, comic relief, and often compared to a puppy or even a kicked puppy at times.

He is probably the most childish ally within your party, even making Dog seem more mature – and he’s a dog. But he does get just as excited as puppies do and he can also be just as ignorant. Alistair will also pout at times, grumble and even whine like children often do. He’s also got this thing for little figurines, like little boys and their action figures. Also like a kid, responsibility isn’t his thing. He’s very against the idea of leading or being requested to make decisions, especially when they impact a larger group beyond himself. He likes to follow and he’s very good at it. Having been told what to do all his life and never getting the opportunity to argue otherwise was probably what made him that way. However, this can change if he goes through with the “hardened” trait. If so (and as I stated in the history, this is what I’m sticking to), by the end of the game and even by the time of the Landsmeet he is much more fond of the idea of leading, standing up for himself, and making his own decisions for a change.

Despite that though, he still never disobeys orders and is as loyal as they can come. You want him to run up to some Alpha Genlock while running through a maze of traps then he is your guy. Game play failures aside, he really will stick around no matter what the Warden MC does. While others may depart the party due to different views, Alistair is there for the long run because in the end, killing that nasty Archdemon is his duty as a Grey Warden. (And only Loghain can get in his way, but that’s because of Loghain and only if the MC chooses Loghain over Alistair at the Landsmeet (N/A to this app))

Being a Grey Warden is a big deal for him. He is extremely proud to be one. He truly believes Duncan saved him from his awful fate within the Chantry as a Templar and in that sense feels rather indebted to him. Not to mention, Alistair never felt like he belonged anywhere until he joined the Wardens. The Wardens, to him, were family and the closest to family he had ever really gotten. It is probably because family has always managed to elude him so he is very fond of the idea, like his eagerness to meet Goldanna. (Which went horribly, apparently family is a bit bitter and money grubby) Other than the concept or theory of family, however, he isn’t too much of a fan of his own heritage. It has always been a hindrance to him and has caused him to hate it. Which is another reason why he wanted to meet Goldanna, she was the only family member he knew of that wasn’t involved in any royalty nonsense. If it’s not obvious, Alistair isn’t so fond of his father (or lack thereof) and only knows him to be the absent figure that was everyone else’s great King. If it echoes things at all, after defeating Loghain in a duel during the Landsmeet, Loghain comments that there is a similarity between Maric and Alistair (Loghain and Maric were best friends but Loghain was the one who left Maric’s son Cailan to die on the battlefield) to which Alistair responds with “Forget Maric, this is for Duncan.”

On a lighter note, talking is one of his fortes, not necessarily for quality but quantity. He tends to lack a filter, if you will, and often speaks whatever is on his mind before thinking it through. This leads to him stating the obvious a lot, asking ignorant questions ("Why do they call it a 'brothel?' There's no broth. Or is there?"), making random comments and remarks, and socializing with party members even when they don’t really want to socialize back. In that sense he’s very stubborn. He’ll try and get the truth out of them even if it takes several tries, as he brings up the topic whenever he can. Most often, he’ll be the one to instigate conversations with the other allies, whether it be getting to know them or peculiar questions that have little to do with anything. But even though he is tremendously vocal there are some things he does not like to talk about. Whenever that comes up he’ll eagerly change the subject and talk about something that has nothing to do with the original topic (most often by way of joking). The most commonly known example of this has to do with lampposts…

Alistair is a rather manly man who cries manly tears. He certainly wears his emotions on his sleeve, much like with his speech habits. During a great deal of the game even a slight mentioning of Duncan and the other deceased Grey Wardens will set him off into sniffles and those manly tears. He has no shame in admitting these weaknesses either. In fact, he encourages it and often frowns on those who act tough and don’t admit their fears. He’s also very protective. He often admits that perhaps if he was in the battle with Duncan he could have shielded him from something or had made something of a difference. This is also combined, however, with a sore case of survivor’s guilt.

He’s a bit on the sarcastic side and doesn’t mind making fun of a situation or even himself. It’s his way of coping. Or it could just be his way of lightening the mood even in the worst of circumstances (welcome or otherwise). But even when he mocks himself, he doesn’t really appreciate others doing it for him. He’s well aware a lot of people think of him as an idiot, there’s no need to point it out or rub it in because he really won’t appreciate it. Also, being called cute. Guys don’t like being called cute.

Since he was a Templar, he’s also built a bizarre not-exactly-dislike-but-not-so-adoring-likeness for mages. It’s not the most dominant issue with him and he often doesn’t judge right off the bat but their abilities is something he is at least wary of. Also with the Templar training, as he puts it, was being taught how to be a “gentleman” so commonly his behavior and demeanor toward others is rather polite and kind. Though not always… Even so gentlemanly or otherwise, his hygiene is pretty bad. More than once other people complain and comment about his lack of hygiene. But at least he shaves, which is more than what can be said of Oghren (Well, Oghren has an excuse – he’s a dwarf).

He’s not the best cook, as he readily admits at the start of the game. And his alcohol tolerance is pretty low as well. Supposedly it only takes him about a half pint before he gets all red and giggly. He still likes drinking though and is often jealous that Oghren gets to drink to his heart’s content at any time he wishes and Alistair can’t.

Ally wise, it’s a pretty decent 50/50 split between like/neutral and dislike/neutral. His favorite other party member is by far, the mage Wynne. Besides being all grandmotherly, he likes her morals and appreciates her care and wisdom she bestows upon others. She looks out for him as well and never fails to remind him and the Warden MC of the importance of their task. Wynne is probably the one character he is most childish with, truly acting like a grandson with their grandmother as he asks Wynne to mend his shirts and tend to his ouchies to make them all better. Sometimes, however, Wynne will tease and boy, does he dislike that.

Leliana is also one of the other members he likes. He thinks she’s a little strange, what with that vision nonsense and all, but he also believes she’s got a good heart and knows right from wrong and is just generally a good person. They also have at least a little in common what with both having lived in the Chantry for some time even though Leliana enjoyed it and Alistair despised it. They don’t exactly always see eye-to-eye but she’s at least a good person in her heart with what looks like a dark past she can’t quite shake, or so he’s managed to observe while in camp.

Brosca, the Warden, comes in somewhere in a more liked range as well. It was tough going at first and boy did he dislike her then. Especially with the mocking and some of the more poorer decisions made by the Warden (do not get him started about Isolde…) But by now, the title of friend is at least more than welcome and a mutual understanding has been formed (more or less headcanoning the gradualness of this as the game doesn’t quite agree with awkward shifts in Approval ratings overtime. You either gain or lose, fluctuating makes responses awkward).

More along the neutral side is a combination of Sten, Oghren, Shale and Zevran. So basically, all the other males in the group as well as your resident golem.

Sten is a little intimidating to say the least and Alistair is never one to try and REALLY piss him off. He will poke fun though. Sten is ridiculously quiet and only speaks whatever is necessary and nothing more than that. Silence isn’t really Alistair’s thing so he’ll often try and get Sten to open up and just talk or dabble in conversations in general. Alistair has a thing about asking what people do while stuck in one place for a long time (in Sten’s case, that’d be the cage he was in).

Oghren is … a handful. Even though he’s a little jealous of his excessive amount of drinking, he’s otherwise rather neutral with him. Although Oghren calls him little pike twirler, for whenever Alistair tries “practicing” while at camp. Oghren also tends to talk about things that makes Alistair feel a little uncomfortable and embarrassed. Like I said, a handful. But he’s funny sometimes (I guess).

But that can also be said about Zevran, one who also possesses no filter or consideration on embarrassing topics. At first, Alistair is very uneasy about Zevran. But who can blame him? He’s an assassin that was sent to KILL the Wardens and now he’s parading around with them? Pretty sure anyone would be uneasy in that situation. He does warm up to Zevran though and eventually is rather neutral with him. Alistair knows, however, that Zevran isn’t really telling them everything and often tries to pry the truth from him with little success.

Shale is a different case of a handful. They don’t usually get along, but well enough to poke fun and make fun of each other. Alistair more often than not pokes fun at Shale’s obsession against birds, and Shale for Alistair’s complacency and desire to follow orders (which can actually piss him off quite a bit when the prying goes too far). Again, we have questions concerning feelings about staying in one place for so long (30 years in Honnleath, ouch Shale), adding to Alistair’s odd fascination with the concept of not always being on the move (and likely having to do with his interest in a stable “normal” life)

And then. Morrigan. Alistair HATES her. See? Behold that emphasis. The two do not get along by any means. Besides being an apostate, that big Templar no-no, she’s just an outright bitch a lot of the time. Usually anytime they do speak it is in quarrels and mockery, often against his intelligence. There’s just seriously something about her, that even he isn’t all that sure of, that irks him to no end. He really doesn’t trust her and after the first few conversation attempts he just tries to not speak with her. At times and given certain scenarios he’ll just tell her to outright Shut up. You go, good sir.

Oh. And Dog. Well. They’re like two puppies put in a small space for hours and hours together. They get along and they don’t get along. Alistair enjoys mocking the Dog though, and his intelligence. Probably because Dog is the only party member with a clearly established lower IQ.

Abilities, Weaknesses, and Power Limitations:

Abilities: Alistair within the game is a warrior, his specialty being sword and shield and therefore defense. Alistair will have mastered all Weapon and Shield skills; making him a very capable defender. He also holds mastery to the Templar (higher than average mental resistance and can nullify magic spells) specialization and Champion (supportive specialization that boosts party members’ attack and defense, as well as potentially knocking back enemies).

Weakness: He’s really just your average guy in a metal suit. A really heavy and cumbersome metal suit. He’s not the fastest by a long shot, and definitely not the strongest. His defense may be high and his armor might help some, but Alistair has this awful tendency to leap before looking (not to mention heavier armor naturally lures enemies, as if tossing himself in front of things wasn’t bad enough). If he does manage to injure himself which is quite likely, he gets to try and heal the old fashioned way unless someone with instant healing skills is willing to lend a hand.

His Templar abilities, although remarkably useful at times still can’t always take down a mage type in time. If he can’t get near them then no dice. Not to mention the average Templar uses lyrium to enhance their skills while Alistair does not. Did I mention his dying a slow and painful death? Pain is a give or take but the taint is still doing its thing meaning time’s limited. Less of a downer in combat, exactly, and more of a general sense.

Power limitations: Cutting out all those fabulous Warden perks from mildly increased strength to regeneration bonuses. Although they were small bonuses to begin with (he’s still only been a Warden for ~2 years) they’ll definitely level the playing field some. If anything more needs a serious cap, let me know.

Samples

Log Sample: From the test drive meme! Let me know if that's not enough.

Network Sample: [Someone is clearly new at this and failing miserably. Despite the video, everything seems to be at a strange angle.] So they said if I… push this… no. This one? Oh! Oh, it’s already working. Right. Oh look, I can see myself. Hellooo.

But I… guess others can see this too. Right. Ahem. Ignore that. Just… testing.

Anyways! If everyone can see this then, can I ask a question? How long exactly are we expected to be here? It’s not that I’m not enjoying your uh, charming city or anything. Really, no. Love the sites and the um, metal everywhere. It’s great! Really. But no, you see… there’s something very, very important I need to get back to. Immediately. And yes, I know it was said a lot of times that … that’s not going to happen. But just… well, just double checking. I guess. [:(]

Anyways that’s all I really wanted to say for now. So thanks. [And he stands still for a while awkwardly smiling at the device, followed by an array of perplexed looks. Because who ever heard of off buttons?]
